About Lauren
Dr. Lauren Aleksunes is a Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Rutgers University, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. The research of her laboratory focuses on mechanisms of toxicity including the role that membrane transporters play in regulating cellular responses to drugs and environmental chemicals. With a key focus on drug-induced kidney injury, the Aleksunes laboratory has demonstrated 1) the utility of urinary protein biomarkers for the detection of subclinical nephrotoxicity, 2) role of membrane transporters in regulating nephrotoxin disposition, and 3) antioxidant responses of the Nrf2-Keap1 signaling pathway in the kidneys. Her laboratory has been highly productive in the fields of transporter biology and toxicology with over 120 publications (h-index: 41). Dr. Aleksunes’ review article on xenobiotic transporters in Pharmacological Reviews that has been cited over 520 times. In 2019, she received the Outstanding Young Investigator Award from the Society of Toxicology Women in Toxicology and the Richard Okita Early Career Award in Drug Metabolism and Disposition from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
